1. What is Foom?
Foom is a strategic, immersive simulation that places participants at the forefront of AI development and decision-making. Designed for professionals, policymakers, and organizations, Foom challenges teams to navigate the critical ethical, societal, and regulatory challenges posed by advanced AI. Teams take on roles such as business leaders, regulators, developers, and public representatives, making critical decisions about AI progress in a rapidly evolving world. By placing participants in roles they may not play day-to-day, it also fosters a critical perspective of different social, technological and political demands.

Foom workshops can be customized to reflect sector-specific challenges, and programmed for different cultures and geographies (We have already adapted and run it in three countries). We incorporate relevant scenarios to make the simulation more impactful for your team’s unique needs.
3. What happens during a Foom session?
The Foom experience consists of a series of round-based, multi-team decision-making scenarios. Teams are presented with escalating AI challenges and must collaborate, negotiate, and decide whether to continue AI development, regulate it, or stop it altogether.
A Foom workshop typically lasts 3 to 4 hours, including a briefing, five rounds of decision-making, and a final debrief session. However, sessions can be adjusted to fit your organization’s schedule and needs. Foom can form the core of a multi-day strategy retreat, be a standing experience at an event, or another kind of embedded strategic learning exercise.

6. Can Foom be experienced remotely or in person?
Yes, Foom workshops are highly flexible. We offer both in-person workshops and remote sessions with digital facilitation, ensuring that teams can participate regardless of their location.
Foom is adaptable for virtual environments, allowing teams from different regions to participate seamlessly in the simulation.
Note: As an experiential exercise in part, participants benefit from face-to-face collaboration, and the experience is optimized by a place-based experience. We recommend in-person delivery where possible.
7. How many people can Foom accomodate?
With 5 teams, we find 15 participants are a useful minimum, and 30 is a useful maximum for a standard session. Sessions could be larger with customization. Contact us below to find out more about team dynamics.
8. Is Foom only about AI?
Foom is the first module of what we hope will be additional topical modules that deal with new frontier risks, running on the same underlying simulation process. We’re already looking at issues like climate, health and political disruptions as future topics. If this sounds interesting, let’s discuss. All of these modules are adapted to the context of the players and organization, so customization to specific audiences is a key capability.
